As promised, President Donald Trump unveiled wide-ranging tariffs this week. At a White House ceremony, the President said he would impose a 10% tariff on all imports as well as much higher “reciprocal” tariffs on dozens of countries that the administration says have treated the United States unfairly and has led to large trade deficits for the U-S. Canada & Mexico were spared from those new tariffs, but the 25% tariffs already imposed in March will remain in place.
The President saying that tariffs are needed to boost domestic production, and bring back jobs, including auto manufacturing, which Mr. Trump says will be driven by a 25% tariff on all cars & trucks built outside the U-S that went into effect on Thursday. Many others, however, including New York Senator Chuck Schumer, see the tariffs and the impact they’ll have on the American economy, quite differently. Schumer says the tariffs will end up costing the average family in New York about 65-hundred dollars more a year.
North Country Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik said in a statement that she “strongly supports President Trump’s American First economic policies to strengthen American manufacturing and create millions of American jobs. Stefanik says for too long, Americans have suffered under unfair trade practices putting America last. We will not allow other countries to take advantage of us and we must put America and the American worker first.”
