Whitney Houston’s iconic portrayal of diva Rachel Marron in the 1992 movie adaptation by Mick Jackson is still fondly remembered today. The lastest musical to hit the stage of Montreal’s Théâtre St-Denis is a thrilling romantic experience that celebrates the music icon’s vast repertoire.
The direction of THE BODYGUARD, a new major production currently running from March 30th, 2023, at Théâtre St-Denis in Montreal and on the stage of the Théâtre Capitole in Quebec City this summer, from June 28, 2023, has been entrusted to Quebecer Joël Legendre, who was at the helm of Rock of Ages and choreographed by Steve Bolton, the premier choreographer of musicals in Quebec (Mamma Mia, Mary Poppins, Rock of Ages, etc…)
The plot of The Bodyguard revolves around Frank Farmer, a former secret service agent who becomes an elite bodyguard hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an anonymous stalker. Despite their initial reluctance to work together, Frank and Rachel soon find themselves embroiled in a passionate love story.
Among others, fans will be thrilled to hear the hit songs from the famous soundtrack of ‘The Bodyguard’ such as ‘Queen of the Night, Run to You, I Have Nothing’, and one of the greatest hits of all time, ‘I Will Always Love You‘, all originally performed by the legendary Whitney Houston.
Needless to say, the title role requires technically difficult vocal feats…
This is where the producers were blessed to find their star: Jennifer-Lee Dupuy. The Quebecois singer, raised in the gospel tradition, has been a member of numerous choirs and earns her living as a project manager in a construction materials company.
At last night’s premiere, she received a standing ovation for her rendition of the beloved“I Will Always Love You.”
Sharon James who portrayed Rachel’s sister Nicki Marron in the show, delivered a deep and emotionally elegant performance of “Saving All My Love.” Another standout performer was the young child who played Rachel’s son Fletcher who showcased remarkable vocal and dance skills reminiscent of a young Michael Jackson (featured above with Frédérick De Grandpré ).
