Tim Collins Returns To Plattsburgh In Reunion Of Jazz Masters

Tim Collins, the Plattsburgh native who has gone on to receive global acclaim as a master of the vibes, will return from his new home in Germany this weekend for his first North Country appearances since the COVID-19 pandemic in a collaboration with Hill and Hollow Music and Curbside At Harborside.

This Saturday night on Plattsburgh’s Harborside Stage, Collins will be joined by celebrated saxophonist and composer Christine Jensen from Montreal, whose work as a bandleader has earned two Juno Awards for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year, and by two top-quality collaborators in bassist Marcos Varela and percussionist Jon Wikan. On Sunday afternoon, the artists will perform another concert at Saranac’s Weatherwatch Farm, joined by Christine’s award-winning trumpet-playing sister, Ingrid.

Collins, who dreamed of playing for the New York Yankees during his Plattsburgh boyhood, pursued a musical career instead, leading him to the Manhattan School of Music and then to a stellar reputation as a vibraphone player throughout Europe, recording several albums — including plenty of original works influenced by his North Country upbringing — and serving on the faculty of the University of Vienna and the Bavarian International School. He returns to his hometown as a musical leader, at home in the company of the jazz all-stars with whom he will play in these concerts.

On Saturday, gates open at 6:30 p.m. for parking at the Harborside Stage — located at 2 Dock Street in Plattsburgh, behind the D&H Railroad Station and adjacent to the City of Plattsburgh Marina — with the concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20 per carload (not per person).

Attendees can bring a lawn chair and sit outside for the concert, or can remain inside their vehicles and listen to the music broadcast directly from the stage over their car radio. Audience members fully vaccinated for COVID-19 are not required to wear a face mask, but attendees are requested to refrain from bringing alcohol or pets into the Harborside Lot.

Tremendous thanks are due to Mickey’s Restaurant & Lounge, and to Bruce Building LLC, for their generous sponsorship of this concert, which allows this program to be provided as an affordable live music offering.

Sunday’s program will take place at 4 p.m. at Weatherwatch Farm in Saranac, with admission of $20 per person, a price that includes light refreshments. Advance reservations are required for Sunday’s concert. Reservations for Sunday’s program can be made via email (ambrown.hillholl@gmail.com) or by phone (518-293-7613).
