Playing Toward Progress:  Autism Support

Each April we commemorate Autism Acceptance Month. It is a time when people are invited to appreciate the unique perspectives, strengths, and experiences of people on the autism spectrum.

According to the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,  About 1 in 31 children in the U.S. have been identified with autism spectrum disorder.  Our Community Contributor Anna Channell speaks with educator Katie Calkins about the PLAY Project, a parent and professionally implemented intensive early intervention program that helps children learn best through the art of playing. Calkins is a speech-language pathologist for the Saranac School District in Clinton County, New York. She says playing “improves a child’s social functioning, an area where children with autism are often challenged.”
