The History of Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a day to celebrate all that we are thankful for in our lives. How will you celebrate Thanksgiving this year?
A Little History:
Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday on October 3, 1863, in the midst of the Civil War. It was a time when Americans were at war with each other, but it was also a time when the War was starting to turn in favor of the Union.
That previous summer, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War took place: The Battle of Gettysburg. Over three days, Union and Confederate armies battled, and when it was over, the Union was victorious. It would be the turning point in the War, and it was a victory that had eluded Lincoln for years. He had much to be grateful for, as he saw that America could be saved.
