Montreal’s iconic St. Joseph Oratory of Mount Royal, is the largest church in Canada and its dome basilica is the second-largest after Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
.
The Crypt Church
Snugly embedded into the mountain underneath the dome basilica, the Crypt Church with its oak woodwork, lighting fixtures, and elaborate ceiling arches is visually pleasing to the masses.
The church has a seating capacity of 1000 people and was constructed using Dalbé Viau and Alphonse Venne’s neoclassical design as part of a massive architectural ensemble.
The church is called a “crypt” due to its flattened arches as well as its position under the Basilica – which also allows for a sonorous venue to host various concerts.
