The North Country Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual State Legislative Forum recently with State Assemblyman Billy Jones and State Senator Dan Stec discussing some of the major issues before the State Legislature right now. At the top of the list, the current budget talks and the Governor’s proposed changes to the Foundation Aid formula used to distribute school aid which many districts say is going to result in significant cuts in funding.
Jones and Stec both say lawmakers are looking at preventing those cuts from happening. In fact, both the Assembly & Senate voted just this week to restore more than one-and-a-half-billion-dollars in school aid, and to form a commission to look at how to rework the education funding formula. Other legislative priorities this year include Medicaid costs, affordable childcare, and the need for new housing.
