The American Diplomat explores the lives and legacies of three African American ambassadors—Edward R. Dudley, Terence Todman, and Carl Rowan—who broke through racial barriers to reach high-ranking appointments in the Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy administrations.
Despite facing discrimination at home during the civil rights movement, these men were tasked with representing American ideals abroad. Known for its elitist character, the U.S. State Department was among the last federal agencies to desegregate. This film, featuring rare archival footage and interviews, highlights how these trailblazers transformed the Foreign Service and left an indelible mark on American diplomacy. Watch on PBS.
