After several days of negotiations, the union representing the striking correction officers, the Department of Corrections, and the Hochul Administration have reached a tentative agreement to end the strike by corrections officers at state prisons across New York.
The agreement, that still needs to be approved by the corrections officers who walked off the job nearly two weeks ago, includes temporary changes to the HALT Act for the next 90 days, as well as better overtime pay — and limits on mandatory overtime.
The Department of Corrections says it will not take any disciplinary action against the corrections officers as long as they return to work this weekend, by Saturday, March 1st. Along with demands to address staffing shortages, the corrections officers have been calling for a full repeal of HALT Act, which limits the use of solitary confinement in prisons.
