Swinging in Style: Jazz & Jeans with OCM

“Jazz is the art of making something out of nothing and everything out of something.”George Gershwin

Last Tuesday, The Orchestre Classique de Montréal (OCM) took a bold step out of the traditional symphonic box and into the lively world of jazz.

The audience, many of whom wore their best denim, embraced the laid-back yet vibrant atmosphere, making this a concert that was as much about style as it was about the music.

And trust me, the music was electric.

The evening kicked off with the OCM‘s signature blend of classical precision and jazzy improvisation

Under the direction of Adam Johnson, the orchestra danced through the swinging rhythms of Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Harry James, and Cathy Morris, with the evocative sounds of George Gershwin rounding out the program.

A special highlight? The stunning “Rhapsody in Blue” that swirled in the air, bringing a touch of Gershwin’s magic to life.

But the real stars of the night were the virtuoso soloists. Paul Merkelo, the OSM’s trumpet maestro, played with such flair and finesse, especially during Harry James’ Concerto for Trumpet, that it felt as though the trumpet was telling its own story. His passion was infectious, from storytelling interesting facts about the composers, to his playing, making every note sing with emotion.

Meanwhile, Matt Herskowitz, the local jazz piano giant, brought his unmistakable groove and playfulness to the stage, effortlessly switching between classical beauty and the improvisational spirit of jazz. His three unique improvisation cadenzas for “Rhapsody” was met with thunderous applause.

Then came the magic of the encore—a spellbinding version of Summertime. The quartet of Paul Merkelo, Matt Herskowitz, and two OCM players delivered a version so rich and cool, it was as if the summer heat was swirling through the room. It was the perfect, relaxed yet soul-stirring finish to a night of outstanding music.

For anyone who loves a bit of jazz with their classical, or simply craves a concert that feels like a celebration, Jazz & Jeans was the perfect fusion.

– Comfortable jeans, excellent music, and a crowd of all ages—it was an evening that left me smiling and looking forward to warmer days.

If you missed it, don’t worry; keep an eye on future OCM events—this blend of style and sound is bound to happen again!
