For next week’s Watch & Wonder Highlight, we’re thrilled to feature the special Secrets of Underground London. After watching, dive deeper with resources about new developments beneath the surface of central London—a metro line connecting to the city’s old Underground network—on PBS LearningMedia.
On the surface, London is a buzzing, modern metropolis–but underneath lies a secret, hidden world. Secrets of Underground London uncovers 2000 years of subterranean history: a world of ancient caves and perfectly preserved Roman remains; mysterious rivers and gruesome plague pits; impenetrable vaults and top-secret bunkers.

Super Tunnel | Extending London’s Underground Railway
Grades 6-12
Learn how engineers are building a new metro line beneath central London that connects with the city’s existing Underground network, in this media gallery from NOVA: Super Tunnel. Two videos detail the engineering challenges and the technologies used to dig a tunnel without disrupting the busy streets above. To remove earth, the project uses eight tunnel-boring machines, each 490 feet in length and 1,000 tons in weight. To help ensure safety at the surface, a network of lasers and targets monitors building movements that may result from disturbing the ground below.
In school or at home, take advantage of the Watch & Wonder broadcast schedule.
