Pro Baseball Kicks Off in Lyon Mountain, NY

This summer, not one, but three professional baseball teams are playing in the Adirondacks. The Empire League is fielding teams in Plattsburgh, Saranac Lake, and for the first time, a team in Tupper Lake. In the aftermath of COVID, with restrictions still in place, Empire League Owner and President Eddie Gonzalez decided to have the teams play almost all of their games this season in the Adirondacks. Also, the Plattsburgh team is playing at a new home this summer. A non-profit community group in Lyon Mountain has fixed up the ballfield in their community and invited the Plattsburgh Thunderbirds to play all of their home games there this summer. Baseball and the ballfield have quite a history in Lyon Mountain dating back to the 1800s when miners from all over the world who worked in the iron ore mines would come together to play baseball. The Lyon Mountain Citizens Youth League non-profit group created a video to go along with its GoFundMe drive and page seeking donations for their ballfield. The group raised more than $25,000 to fix up the playing field and will also help pay for improvements to the grandstand, rest rooms and a concession stand.
