Press Conference Fuels More Speculation Stefanik Jumping Into Governor’s race

21st District Congresswoman Elise Stefanik joined Republican state lawmakers at the State Capital in Albany this week, blasting Democrats and the recently passed record 254-billion-dollar state budget. When asked how she would have handled the state budget if she were governor, Stefanik said she would take a page from President Trump’s playbook and use executive orders to take a hatchet to state spending.
The Congresswoman also defended proposed federal cuts to Medicaid that she says will reform the program and criticized New York State for providing care for undocumented immigrants. In a statement, New York State Democratic Party Spokesperson Addison Dick accused Stefanik of dodging questions about the proposed federal cuts to Medicaid that Democratic leaders say could eliminate health care for up to two million New Yorkers.
There is a lot of speculation that the Congresswoman plans to challenge Kathy Hochul for Governor in 2026. Stefanik said at this week’s press conference that she’ll decide “in the coming months” whether to run in 2026.
