SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS
After the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, the New York State Sheriffs Association is calling on lawmakers in Albany to put armed officers in every school in New York.
The City of Plattsburgh and 4 schools in Clinton County currently have SROs or Youth Officers dedicated to schools. Clinton County Sheriff Dave Favro joins us to talk about on-going efforts, even before the latest school shooting, to put officers in more schools throughout the county.

Sheriff Favro also discusses the waves of refugees passing through Clinton County on their way to the Northern Border, where by the thousands they are crossing illegally in Canada, seeking asylum; and the tension on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus and in the community after a racist message was posted on social media and white supremacy flyers and signs were left in neighborhoods near the college. FRIENDSHIP VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
There is a service here in the North Country that will send a volunteer right to the homes of seniors living in remote parts of the Adirondacks to drive them to the doctor or grocery store. It’s called Mercy Care, and as our Jack LaDuke tells us, it’s expanding to more communities in Essex and Franklin Counties

OSCAR WIN
Employees of a Montreal special effects studio are celebrating this week, after their work on a film paid off at the Academy Awards ceremony last Sunday. Last we week took you inside the headquarters of Rodeo FX, the Montreal-based visual effects company. They’d worked on three out of the five nominated films for Best Visual Effects, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Kong: Skull Island, and Blade Runner 2049. Rodeo FX president Sebastien Moreau told us he was rooting for the movie that involved the closest collaboration between his team of artists and the principle creators of the film. Rodeo FX has contributed its talents to several Oscar-winning films. This marks the second time the company has worked on a film that won the Oscar specifically for Best Visual Effects.
LAKE PLACID TO HOST WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
Lake Placid has been chosen to be the host of the World University Games in 2023. The 11-day event is expected to attract more than 2,500 college athletes from 52 countries to compete in figure skating, skiing, snowboarding, curling and hockey. Although Lake Placid will be the host, events will be held throughout the North Country. Hockey games will be played at SUNY Plattsburgh & Potsdam, and St. Lawrence University in Canton. The skiing and snowboarding events will be staged at Whiteface and Gore Mountains. The bid for the games also proposes building a new curling center in Saranac Lake. Governor Cuomo’s state budget includes 62-million dollars to fix up many of the venues built for the 1980 Winter Olympics in time for the games in 5 years.
