Another hot issue is a proposal in the budget that would allow the Governor to close up to 5 more state prisons. State Senator Dan Stec spoke out against the cuts during a budget hearing last week.
Stec and other North Country lawmakers are hopeful that the Moriah Shock facility in Mineville, that was closed in the last round of cuts 2 years ago, might be one of the state-owned sites the Governor says could be suitable for new housing.
Moriah’s new Town Supervisor, Matt Brassard, says he is hopeful the camp, that the state has continued to maintain, would be one of the sites considered for affordable housing or assisted living for tenants receiving mental health services.
