NY 21 Debate Highlight | Cryptocurrency

During our NY21 Democratic Primary Debate, attentions turned towards Cryptomining and the future it holds for both Plattsburgh and the surrounding area. Cryptomining is a process in which anyone with the right tools can “mine” Cryptocurrency. The appeal of Cryptocurrency being a form of currency that is completely digital.

The low prices of electricity in Plattsburgh has drawn in Cryptominers, who would benefit from low costs of running their power-intensive computers. With almost no regulations on Cryptomining, the city council of Plattsburgh voted unanimously to impose an 18 month ban on the operations until a solution can be instituted.

Concerns came after Cryptocurrency mining in the city led to an increase in usage costs for other customers not involved with the mining. Candidates for NY 21st District explained their solution to the growing problem.

Cryptomining has become a major issue facing the City of Plattsburgh, ultimately ending with an 18 month moratorium, as reported on by PBS Newshour.
