In a major economic blow to the North Country, Nova Bus has announced it will be shutting down its bus assembly line and closing its manufacturing plant in Plattsburgh by 2025. Since 2010, Nova Bus has built commuter busses for transportation systems across the country from the MTA in New York City to San Francisco & Hawaii. The company’s owners, Volvo, say they’ve made the decision to bring all their manufacturing back to Canada after evaluating their profitability and citing continued financial losses over the years. Assemblyman Billy Jones says the company plans to ramp up production now in order to fulfill its current contracts before closing its doors in 2025. Garry Douglas with the North Country Chamber of Commerce says roughly 350 employees at the facility will be impacted by the closure. Douglas says work is already underway to try to fill the void when Nova Bus leaves.
