February is Black History Month and Mountain Lake PBS brings you a wide range of programs to inform and provoke your thinking.

Independent Lens brings us Accidental Courtesy, a look at musician Daryl Davis who meetings and befriends members of KKK, looking for answers to the question, “How can you hate me when you don’t even know me?” (February 19, 11:00 pm); The Talk brings to light the increasingly necessary conversation taking place in homes and communities between parents of colour and their children, especially sons, about how to behave if they are ever stopped by the police February 20, 9:00 pm); Maya Angelou is featured on American Masters (February 21 at 8:00 pm); Finding Your Roots brings us an unexpected twist about two hip hop legends, Sean Combs and LL Cool J (February 28, 8:00 pm).

(February 12 at 10:00 pm) looks at why most kings and queens carefully choreographed their apparel and some calamitous results for those who did not;
Tales From the Royal Bedchamber
(February 19 at 10:00 pm) will delve into the once very public sphere of the royal bedchamber: not only was it the site for royal marriage ceremonies, but royal births were also traditionally observed there by a crowd in order to verify the baby’s gender. Since everyone felt that they had a stake in it, the process of creating royal babies also often took place in a semi-public context….

Screening Diversity and Inclusion: A Documentary Film Series

Canadian Friends of Mountain Lake PBS and The Jeanne Sauvé Foundation invite you to the first of our “Screening Diversity and Inclusion: A Documentary Film Series” taking place at Jeanne Sauvé House from February to May 2017. This unique series will showcase four powerful documentaries on diversity and inclusion as well as Q&A sessions with special guests. Join us as we explore complex challenges – such as social inequality, cultural resilience, racial discrimination and post-conflict reconciliation – in a mindful and respectful environment.

Arts in Exile: Tibetan Treasures in Small Town America

On International Mother Language Day, join us for a screening of Arts in Exile: Tibetan Treasures in Small Town America (2016), a film that explores the ability of arts and culture to unify communities across the world – from Tibet to a small town in upstate New York. The film uses the story of Tenzin and Yangchen Dorjee as a lens to explore the way Tibetans use the arts to keep their culture alive. The film will be followed by Q&A session with guest speakers Yangchen Dorjee, Founder, Tibetan Arts Festival, and Thubten Samdup, former Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

On International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, join us for the screening of The Central Park Five (2012), a film that relates the story of the five teenagers from Harlem who were wrongly convicted of raping a woman in New York City’s Central Park. From award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns, this documentary chronicles The Central Park Jogger case for the first time from the perspective of these five teenagers whose lives were upended by a miscarriage of justice. The film will be followed by Q&A session with guest speaker Fo Niemi, Executive Director, Center for Research-Action on Race Relations.

Join Canadian Friends of Mountain Lake PBS and Congregation Dorshei Emet us for a fascinating look at how five extraordinary, renowned Canadian women use their faith and spirituality to promote participation and equality in political, educational and religious spheres, in their own communities and beyond. This is a celebration of our very Canadian values of diversity, respect and equality that continue to make Montreal and Canada the envy of the world.

Screening of Victoria – Exclusive Gathering in Hudson at Gite 72 / Projection de Victoria – Regroupement exclusif à Hudson au Gite 72
On January 15, a small crowd of lucky guests gathered at Gite 72 in Hudson to watch the premiere of the new series Victoria. Hosted by the incredible Miriam (Min) Dunne, owner of Gite 72, the gathering gave the guests an opportunity to show their support for Canadian Friends of Mountain Lake PBS, while eating delicious food by Le Baron Bites with many in their finest Victorian Sunday best. The challenging game of Downton Abbey Trivia was won by Team Doreen Croll, who were the lucky recipients of a beautiful basket courtesy of Clarence and Cripps.

Supporting Children’s Literacy in Partnership with the Fraser Hickson Library / Soutenant l’alphabétisation des jeunes en partenariat avec les Minibiblios de la bibliothèque Fraser Hickson
Canadian Friends of Mountain Lake PBS donates over 100 books to the Fraser Hickson Library’s Minibiblios program.
The Fraser Hickson Library is an independent library that has been serving Quebec since 1885, working with the community to improve the lives of our citizens by providing access to books.
The library’s Minibiblios program provides an efficient and cost-effective way to build community via access to books and materials where they are needed the most. The library works in partnership with the community at multiple locations throughout the city, providing training, materials and promotion.
