Albany NanoTech is going to be home to the country’s first National Semiconductor Technology Center. Both of New York’s U.S. Senators and Governor Kathy Hochul made the announcement this past week in Albany. Senator Chuck Schumer has secured up to $825 million in federal funding through the CHIPS & Science Act to fund the project.
Albany NanoTech and the Department of Commerce plan to team up to conduct extreme ultraviolet research and development. It will be one of only two facilities in the world with the machinery that’ll use that advanced technology to manufacture a new generation of chips that’ll be used in computers, smartphones, and to power AI. It’s part of the Biden administration’s goal for the U.S. to manufacture 20% of the world’s advanced chips.
The goal is to have the tech center operational by 2025.
