The remnants of Hurricane Helene have caused severe flooding in western North Carolina, especially in the mountains, where up to two feet of rain has fallen. Asheville and surrounding areas are submerged, with widespread power outages, loss of cell service, and washed-out highways making it hard to deliver emergency aid. This situation is reminiscent of the flooding in the Adirondacks after Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 and Super Storm Sandy in 2012. These past disasters led to the creation of a statewide network of weather stations in New York, designed to provide real-time weather data for improved forecasting and emergency response. A new station in Lake Placid, part of the Mesonet network, is collecting data to better prepare communities for the growing threat of extreme weather caused by climate change.
