The five dynamic singers of the Queens on Tour show currently running at the Cabaret du Casino de Montreal

Music ignites the soul of Montrealers this week !

Scientists have been studying how music affects our brain, helping us to make sense of its real emotional and social power…. Whether attending an opera, a rock concert, listening to the radio, or singing with friends around a camp fire, music brings people together, transcends language barriers and fills us with varied emotions. We can collectively agree that music is powerful and here in Montreal, we love it!

This week Gen’s Delights presents a few opportunities to enjoy various types of music around the city!

L’Opéra de Montréal presents Tosca:

Scheming, crime and passion!

Tosca, presented by l’Opéra de Montréal until September 23rd 2017 at Salle Wilfrid Pelletier of La Place des Arts, is one of the most recognized works by Giacomo Puccini. With an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, the dramatic piece is 3 hours long, sung in Italian and whisks its viewers back to the heart of Rome in June 1800.

“Tosca (Melody Moore), a tempestuous opera diva and her lover Mario ( Gian Carlo Monsalve ), a painter who supports the emperor during the Napoleonic wars against the established monarchy, have to go face to face with the evil and quite lustful police chief Scarpia (Gregory Dahl ) .”

Directed by Jose Maria Condemi and starring the American Soprano Melody Moore, the opera is a co-production with the Cincinnati opera and is staged in three acts with sumptuous decors that re-creates real life Roman attractions:  Act one featured the interior of the church of Sant’Andrea Della Valle. Act two presents Scarpia’s apartment in the Palazzo Farnese and the final act, takes place on the ramparts of the Castel Sant’Angelo.

Interior of the church of Sant’Andrea Della Valle

The sets and costumes are exquisite in detail and respects the aesthetic qualities of the historical time period: a stylish elegance that is very Italian.

Dramatic music lovers will be in for a treat: According to musicologist Pierre Vachon, the music is very much like a film score with a lot of action happening between the lines.

As an efficient composer, Puccini didn’t want to speak to the intellect, but rather appeal to the heart.

Why, why, o Lord ?
ah, perchè me ne rimuneri così?
ah, why do you reward me thus?

Moore delivers a brilliant : Vissi d’Arte that is very sensual, captivating and descriptive of the inner tumult that the Diva Floria has to face with the unwanted advances of Scarpia.

Tosca runs the 16th 19th 21st and 23rd  of September 2017 at Place des Arts – Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier

Queens at the Cabaret du Casino de Montreal:

Are you a fan of Melissa Etheridge, Pat Benatar, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Alanis Morissette, Annie Lennox, Tina Turner and Joan Jett ?

Starting September 8th at le Cabaret du Casino de Montreal, the latest show to hit the stage features 5 fiery female artists (Patricia Bernier, Nancy Fortin, Marie-Eve Fournier, Johanne Lefebvre and Marianne Mathieu) , who charm the crowd with their irresistible choreography and covers of the title songs of the queens of rock and pop who forever changed the face of music.

Directed and conceived by Olivier Thuaud, this new extravaganza musical show features sensual choreography and stunning costumes: imagine lingerie clad backup dancers twirling on dangling aerial chains as well as the appearance of a roaring motorcycle on stage!

My favorite moment of the show was when all five singers sat together on high stools and took turns singing in an acoustic medley that included hits such as Sam Brown’s Stop, Killing me Softly (Fugees) and a roller coaster pitched Janis Joplin version of Summertime !

This show will definitely be an unforgettable evening for anyone who appreciates a lively performance that will rouse the crowd.
