Mountain Lake PBS Faces an Unprecedented Threat

Whether you watch from the Adirondacks or across the border in Quebec and Ontario, you know that Mountain Lake PBS is more than a TV station. It’s a trusted source of local storytelling, educational support, and critical public safety services.

But now, all of that is at risk.

Multiple news reports confirm the White House plans to ask Congress to claw back previously approved federal funding for public media—the most serious threat our system has faced in decades. If that happens, the consequences would be devastating not only for Mountain Lake PBS, but for communities across the country who rely on public media.

We have a short window to act. The rescission package is expected to be delivered any day now, and it’s crucial that our representatives hear from their constituents urging them to protect public media.

What’s at stake for our region?

Federal funding—just $1.60 per American per year—powers the public media system, including the local services Mountain Lake PBS provides:

  • Mountain Lake Journal, our weekly public affairs program covering the issues and stories that matter most here at home.
  • In-depth reporting and forums on local concerns like aging, the opioid crisis, and mental health.
  • Free community events and educational outreach, from PBS Kids programming to our Beyond the Peaks Student Film Festival and workshops for teachers.
  • Emergency alerts that reach across our rural region—even where cell and broadband signals don’t.

There is no viable replacement for this funding. And without it, many of these services could be eliminated entirely.
