“alterNatives”: Exploring Contemporary Social Dynamics and uncomfortable truths through Comedy and Cross-Cultural Encounters

Written by renowned Indigenous playwright Drew Hayden Taylor and directed by Xavier Huard, “alterNatives” is set to captivate audiences from October 17 to November 5, 2023.

In this groundbreaking production, Drew Hayden Taylor brings his trademark wit and profound cultural insight to create a wry, humorous exploration of contemporary social dynamics, offering an unfiltered perspective on the complex relationships between Indigenous and settler communities.

The play revolves around the life of Angel, a young Anishinaabe science-fiction writer, who finds himself in a May-December relationship with Colleen, a “non-practicing” Jewish academic devoted to the study of Indigenous literatures.

However, unbeknownst to Angel, Colleen takes the bold step of inviting Angel’s estranged “alterNative warrior” activist friends to share a meal with her own comrades – a pair of white, liberal vegan veterinarians.

What ensues is an uproarious evening filled with cross-cultural communication, and inevitably, miscommunication, shedding light on the uncomfortable truths that continue to influence the relationship between these two contrasting worlds.

The stellar cast includes Charles Bender, Natalie Tannous, Étienne Thibeault, Lesly Velázquez, Nadia Verrucci, and Xavier Watso. These talented actors bring the characters to life, delivering a powerful and thought-provoking performance.

Drew Hayden Taylor’s “alterNatives” promises to be a must-see theatrical experience, serving as a testament to the power of comedy and drama in addressing the pressing issues of our time.

Centaur Theatre’s commitment to bringing this production to its audience underscores the importance of supporting diverse voices and promoting cross-cultural understanding.

alterNatives” runs from October 17 to November 5, 2023, at Centaur Theatre.

Tickets are available for purchase through the Centaur Theatre box office and their official website.

Don’t miss this opportunity to witness a thought-provoking and entertaining exploration of contemporary society.
