The McCord Museum celebrates a decade of couture icon: DIOR
World War II left a dark cloud across Europe – leaving in economic distress Paris – the once darling capital of the fashion industy.
For a decade, post-war from 1947 to 1957, one man revolutionized fashion and revitalized the entire industry by starting DIOR, the now iconic Parisian haute couture label. Christian Dior reinvented modern dressmaking by offering innovative patterns, designs and high end materials while providing his clients with timeless, elegant and form fitting feminine pieces.
Now the McCord museum is proud to present an immersive multimedia exhibition featuring more than 50 original garments and multiple accessories ( Some from local Montreal donors ! ) from the crucial decade when Dior ran his atelier.
In sharp contrast to wartime fashions that were more casual, loosely fitted and subject to the ongoing rationing, Dior was a true visionary in terms of branding and introducing a new feminine esthetic reminiscent of 19 – century silhouettes that boasted rounded shoulders, tightly fitted corsetted upper bodices and long pleated skirts that flowed down to the floor with heavier fabric.
Dior was also eager to collaborate with the very best fashion manufacturers and suppliers and liberally used quality enhancers such as beads, ribbons and lace to accentuate his dresses.
An in-person visit to the exhibit is in order to admire the detailed craftmanship upclose!

Christian Dior – the Exhibit will be open through Jan. 3rd at the McCord Museum, 690 Sherbrooke St. W.
