MLPBS Nominated for Emmys

Mountain Lake PBS is proud to announce three stories from its Veterans Coming Home series have been nominated for Emmy Awards by the Boston/New England Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

This week on Mountain Lake Journal our latest segment takes a look at the many Mohawks who have served in our nation’s armed forces.  This story is part of our ongoing commitment to Veterans’ issues, told through our series Veterans Coming Home. It’s an innovative public media campaign that explores the lives of veterans after they return home, including the challenges they face. You can hear their inspiring stories and learn how our communities are responding to their needs.

Producer Mike Hansen has been honored with New England Regional Emmy nominations for three of his Veterans Coming Home stories. His stories include a Vietnam Vet who is finding therapy in building his own home in the Adirondacks, a Vet struggling with PTSD who with the help of a service dog has found a voice to share with others, and Veterans who are sharing their stories through the pages of a comic book they created.

Nominated in the category of Historic/Cultural Feature or Segment, “Rebuilding” shares how the Vietnam War affected the lives of two North Country locals, one who fought in the war, and one who protested it. Richard and Phyllis share stories of how the war changed them at the time, and how it influences their lives today.

Nominated for Magazine Feature or Segment, “Turning a Mess Into a Message” tells the story of a veteran who turned to alcohol and drugs to deal with PTSD. After receiving a service dog, he now travels New York state sharing his story hoping to help other vets. Hansen shares this nomination with videographer Blake Cortwright.

Nominated in the category of Arts & Entertainment, “When I Returned” explores a program, offered by a comic art institute and a VA hospital, which invites veterans to create comics a way to share their personal stories. Videographer Nilima Abrams is also nominated for this feature segment.

Initially funded in 2016 through a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Veterans Coming Home has continued beyond that initial grant period thanks to local funding from the Cloudsplitter Foundation, Twinstate Technologies, and Casella Resource Solutions.

You can watch all of our Veterans Coming Home series on-air on Mountain Lake Journal, and online, anytime, on our digital platforms at mountainlake.org/vets.
