The end of an era for an iconic piece of Olympic history. The famed scoreboard at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid was lowered from the rafters this week and retired after nearly 40 years. The scoreboard is in countless photographs and video clips from the legendary “Miracle on Ice” game during the 1980 Winter Games when the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team beat the Soviet Union in one of the greatest upsets in sports history. The scoreboard, lit up with the final 4-3 score, is an image etched in the memories of millions. A new half-million dollar high-tech video scoreboard will take its place next week. The old scoreboard was dismantled, and panels will go to museums across the country, including the Lake Placid Winter Olympic Museum.
