Autumn in Southern Ontario brings crisp air, glowing foliage, and a fresh wave of inspiration for adventures.
If you’re looking for fun things to do with your family this October, here are three outing ideas that mix adventure, immersion, and live performance:
1. Dive into Underwater Beauty — Ripley’s Aquarium, Toronto

If your family loves marine life or just beautiful visuals, Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is a must.
Located in the heart of downtown Toronto beside the CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is home to over 16,000 aquatic animals from around the world. Since opening in 2013, the 135,000-square-foot attraction has become one of the city’s top destinations, immersing visitors in 5.7 million litres of water-filled wonder.

One of the highlights is to wander through the stunning curved underwater tunnel and marvel as sharks, fish and other curious sea creatures glide above you. The curved acrylic walls give the surreal impression of walking right through the ocean, surrounded by creatures of every shape and size.

Don’t miss the interactive touch tanks where you can meet manta rays up-close: always a hit with kids and adults alike.
As for the jellyfish? At Planet Jellies, their hypnotic dance of changing colors and elegant tentacles can enchant young and old for minutes on end.

Every night after 5 pm , the aquarium hosts “Sharks After Dark” , a discounted admission program at Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada with savings of $5.00 per entry . This option provides a chance to see the aquarium during less crowded evening hours.
Dive into the rhythms of the deep every second Friday of the month with Jazz Night at the Aquarium. Enjoy timeless jazz classics performed live as you sip your favorite drink surrounded by mesmerizing marine life: an enchanting evening of music, ambiance, and oceanic wonder.
A few tips:
Plan ahead and check the aquarium’s schedule for special evening events or extended hours.
Go early in the day or late afternoon to avoid peak crowds. Parking can be found nearby.
Dress in layers and allow time for breaks; there is a themed café inside the aquarium.

2. Step Into Darkness — Darkfield Immersive Audio Experience at Stackt Market

Here’s how it works:
Darkfield runs from early October through November 9th at Stackt Market.
Darkfield can be described as an experience that feels like virtual reality for your ears, with total darkness and sound that shifts around you. Slight or sudden movement and decor shaking can also be felt.

Two distinct shows are offered: Séance and Flight. Each takes about 20 minutes with a few minutes for instructions and some background storytelling from the staff .
The shows are staged inside customized shipping containers, in total darkness, using 360-degree binaural sound and sensory effects to plunge participants into a unique narrative.
Of note: This new attraction is not suitable for children under 15, and those aged 13 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Also please advise staff is you have back problems, heart issues or are pregnant.
Because it’s so different from your typical museum or theatre outing, it is a thrilling pick for families with older kids or teens, or a fun date activity for those who enjoy immersive storytelling and sensory adventures.

3. Venture out and Catch a Show at the Rose Theatre, Brampton:

The Rose Theatre in Brampton is a full-service performing arts hub with an 868-seat main hall and a secondary studio space, a smaller multi-purpose hall (“Studio Two”) which accommodates more modest events and adds flexibility to the venue’s programming.
The venue is widely praised for its modern architectural design and excellent acoustics.
A Personal Note: The Rose Orchestra’s “My Country, My Land”

Addressing the crowd he talked about the unifying quality of music:
“Music has the power to unite people from every corner of the world,” says Maestro Tan. “It speaks a universal language that transcends culture, age, and background.”
I recently attended a concert by The Rose Orchestra titled My Country, My Land , which beautifully showcased the kind of classical programming you can experience there.

The program journeyed from Bohemia to Canada, featuring Smetana’s The Moldau and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with guest performers the Bedford Trio, under conductor Samuel Tak-Ho Tam.
Another highlight was a performance by the The Youth division Rosebud Orchestra led by David Rehner, who is the Rosebud Music Director and the Rose Orchestra’s concertmaster.
The musical interplay and emotional sweep of both orchestras were captivating and ultimately was a beautiful night out for anyone who loves orchestral music.
If your family enjoys orchestral concerts, opera, jazz, or musical theater, keeping an eye on The Rose Theatre Instagram is a great idea. And because it’s just outside the city, you get to enjoy a mix of arts and a pleasant drive, especially lovely in autumn when the leaves are changing.

October 24 — Toronto Symphony Orchestra: Fiesta Sinfonica
October 30 — Tom Morello: A Night of Songs & Stories
