Advocates have launched a statewide campaign to try to convince New York State Lawmakers to allow terminally ill patients to have the choice to end their lives if their pain and suffering become too much to bear. They are pushing to get the Medical Aid in Dying Act up for a vote in the Legislature this coming session. Advocates say after debating the issues for 8 years, it is time for New York to join ten other states and legalize that option. Opponents include the Catholic Church and some disabled rights advocates who say it is morally wrong to end one’s own life and worry the law could be abused. Backers of the bill say safeguards are built into the law that would prevent that from happening.
