EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KRISTEN AMANDA SMITH (GRETCHEN WIENERS)

I also had the chance to sit down with Kristen Amanda Smith, who portrays the iconic character of Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls. Smith shared some insightful thoughts about the show and the important messages it delivers. Here’s what she had to say:

Q: How do you think the social dynamics in high school contribute to the perpetuation of bullying, and what steps can schools take to create a more inclusive environment?

Kristen Amanda Smith:
“I think everyone can relate to seeing the different cliques that can happen in high school and how that affects the environment. Naturally, people with similar interests gravitate towards each other and sometimes that leads to exclusion, which can be a form of bullying. It’s important that schools create a safe space for students to talk about their interests and maybe this will invoke change and create new interpersonal connections.”

Q: Mean Girls explores themes of friendship, identity, and peer pressure. What are some of the key life lessons that the musical offers about staying true to oneself?

Kristen Amanda Smith:
“There are many lessons to be learned throughout the show but the most important is to stay true to who you are and treat everyone with respect. We see through Cady’s journey that she struggles with her own moral compass and the pressure to please the plastics and Aaron. This is something a lot of people can relate to. We often feel pressure to change ourselves to fit in but being yourself is always better.”

Q: The musical emphasizes the impact of words and actions on others. What do you think Mean Girls teaches about the power of language in shaping a school’s culture, especially when it comes to preventing bullying?

Kristen Amanda Smith:
“Language can definitely have an effect on a school’s culture. It’s important to teach kids how to communicate clearly and kindly with each other. There’s often a lack of attention to guiding students through conflict which leads to misunderstandings and arguments that can be avoided with a simple conversation about how you are feeling.”

ABOUT Mean Girls:
Mean Girls originally opened on Broadway in 2018 and quickly became one of the most buzzed-about musicals in recent history. The show’s witty dialogue, sharp satire, and electrifying performances have earned it multiple Tony Award nominations, while its catchy score continues to make waves in the world of musical theater.
