On Wednesday April 30th was held the premiere of Carcaça, Marco da Silva Ferreira’s latest choreographic firework presented by Danse Danse at Théâtre Maisonneuve.
The high energy dance work was an exhilarating piece with a relentless pace and fierce physicality.
The ten agile dancers ignited the stage with a visceral energy that lingered with audience members and kept them stomping their feet as they exited the theater into the lobby.

Performed by a dynamic ensemble of ten dancers, accompanied by an impressive live percussion and a skilled electronic musician, Carcaça pulses with movement rooted in both tradition and rebellion.
House, voguing, and the intricate footwork of Portuguese folk dances are woven into a tapestry of resistance, queerness, and cultural memory.
At the heart of it all is Ferreira himself, delivering a virtuosic solo that felt both deeply personal and defiantly universal.

In an illuminating after-talk, Marco da Silva Ferreira offered audiences rare insight into his creative process. He revealed that he conceived Carcaça in three distinct visual and emotional layers:
-A 3D floor space, where dancers inhabit shifting personas and interact freely within an ever-changing collective identity.

-A bi-dimensional constraint, created using over-sized t-shirts ( above) that serve as physical and symbolic barriers—straitjackets that trap the dancers in front of a looming wall, evoking themes of control, conformity, and limitation.

-A final act of liberation, as the wall collapses and the performers erupt into newfound freedom, reclaiming space with cathartic motion and unrestrained joy.
The transitions between these states are not only clear but masterfully rendered, immersing the audience in a profound journey from containment to release.
Ferreira’s choreographic voice is distinct—at once grounded in socio-cultural context and pushing at the edges of form and identity.

Carcaça is a must-see for lovers of contemporary dance and those curious about where the body meets the politics of presence. It is an urgent, alive, and unapologetically bold work that reaffirms Marco da Silva Ferreira’s place as a vital voice in today’s international dance scene.
Remaining performances run through May 3 at Théâtre Maisonneuve.
