Yesterday`s grandiose media premiere of KOOZA, held under the big white top in the Old Port of Montreal, marks another milestone for Cirque du Soleil.
After two long years of hiatus, the human-only circus troupe cannot wait to have fans return to enjoy the magic this summer!
Running from May 12th, 2022 -to August 14th, 2022
Laughter! Acrobatic! Heartfelt emotion!
15 years after its creation, Cirque du Soleil’s show “Kooza” is a return to the original roots of ‘Cirque‘ that combines two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning.
The cirque formula remains the same: ( elaborate costumes, live musicians and a variety of symmetrical choreography ), that is not extremely innovative in terms of theme or overall storytelling, yet will be commercially successful with attendees of all ages.
There are truly some remarkable circus acts that are showcased in KOOZA, such as the main highlight: the Wheel of Death, performed with panache and a “devil may care`` carefreeness by a duo of agile acrobats who appear to be out-running the God of Death himself, in the way that they jump, skip ropes and throw themselves freely above and inside the rotating cyclical structure !
More than one audience member was holding their breath with anticipation of the next jump accentuated by the steady hard rock music pounding above from the 6 member live band in the overhead gallery.
One can’t help but admire the physique, stamina and bravery of the solo artist who performed a jaw dropping handstand atop a tower of unfaltering chairs ( see picture below)… Add to this, three very flexible contortionists, a swinging trapeze act with tantilizing triple twists and a double high-wire act … There’s no doubt in anybody`s mind that Kooza presents the opportunity to admire and watch in action some of the most skilled circus performers in the world!
There range of costumes is varied in theme with easy-on-the-eye subdued hues, grim reaper skull faces and even a cute dog with a hanging tongue.
The costumes somehow make the performers look like they are ready to make an appearance at a Dia del Muerto parade:
KOOZA is approximately just over two hours long.
Throughout the show, a crew of six live performers including two singers , belt out dynamic song numbers that highlight each act.
The heart and soul of Kooza is really about getting back to the original roots of Cirque that wowed audience members over back in the 1980’s and 90’s.
The show also does away with comical and sometimes ‘hit or miss’ storylines and KOOZA doesn`t try to push or insert new `fashionable acts or numbers’ that would detract from the original street performer style.
KOOZA is running under the Big White top in Old Port of Montreal from May 12th, 2022 -to August 14th, 2022
