There’s growing concern that an invasive fish, the Round Goby, is getting closer and closer to Lake Champlain. We talk about the threat it could pose to the lake’s prized sport fish, and the immediate step some environmental groups believe the State of New York should take to try to stop it with Willsboro Town Supervisor Shaun Gilliland and NYSDEC Commissioner Basil Seggos.
While NYS and fisheries biologists keep an eye out for new threats, like the Round Goby, they’re currently working to boost the populations of sport fish that are already in Lake Champlain, including Atlantic Salmon. A pilot stocking program, started last spring, raises young salmon in pens at the Plattsburgh Boat Basin, in the hopes that after their release, the salmon will return to the same area of the lake in a few years when it’s time to spawn.
