Despite strong public opposition, the House of Representatives has approved a legislative package that would claw back $1.1 billion in approved public media funding. The package now advances to the Senate, where it only needs 50 votes to pass. The Senate’s consideration timing remains uncertain, but action is expected in the weeks ahead. The Senate has until July 18 to consider the proposal.
If the Senate approves this massive cut, the consequences for Mountain Lake PBS’s local service will be immediate and severe. We will be forced to make extremely difficult decisions about what local services will be able to continue, and what we’ll need to cut.
It costs just about $1.60 per person each year to keep these vital services available to everyone. Wiping out this funding will have an extremely minimal impact on the federal debt, but it could destroy local public broadcasting stations through the country.
