PBS has created a vast library of veteran’s stories across platforms. Locally, Mountain Lake PBS has produced many documentaries and digital shorts telling the stories of the veterans right here in our own back yard. On Veterans Day, honor your local vets today with these local stories that bring awareness to the tough transition they face when returning home.

Veterans Coming Home Web Series
Veterans Coming Home is an innovative cross-platform public media campaign and web series exploring the lives of post-9/11 veterans, the divide between them and their communities, and the stereotypes that veterans and civilians hold about each other. Mountain Lake PBS is proud to be a part of this nationwide initiative with digital shorts like the ones seen below. Be sure to visit the Veterans Coming Home Youtube channel for access to more videos from PBS national and affiliates across the country.
Veterans Coming Home | Equine Therapy
Equine therapy is helping servicemen and women who are trying to adjust to life back home after serving in Iraq & Afghanistan. Homeward Bound Adirondacks is a non-profit group assisting Veterans with services that include equine therapy. As part of our ongoing Veterans Coming Home campaign at Mountain Lake PBS, producer Michael Hansen introduces us to Valerie Ainsworth, a clinical social worker and therapist who assists veterans and their families using horses.
LOVE OF PHOTOGRAPHY | Veterans Coming Home
We meet a Vietnam veteran, who discovered a passion for photography, that after the war, turned into a career. Watch Michael Hansen’s Veterans Coming Home story on Clifford Oliver, who as an African-American, faced racism in the Deep South during his time in the service.
Veterans Coming Home: Protecting Their True Land
Many Americans are unaware of the large number of Native Americans who have served in our nation’s military. Many may know of the Code Talkers in World Wars One and Two, but there are thousands of other Native Americans who have, and continue to serve in our nation’s armed forces. After decades of persecution, why would Indigenous People want to risk their lives for a country that has treated their people so poorly? Veterans Coming Home producer Mike Hansen found many Mohawks living on both sides of the border who say serving in the military has been a way of life for generations.
