This is the week we honor the sacrifice of all the heroes, all the men and women who gave their lives in military service to America. About 23-hundred American flags were placed at veterans’ gravestones in several cemeteries in Plattsburgh this Memorial Day. Dozens of them with the help the Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York, Troop 4203 in Peru. Amelia Haag and fellow scouts Hayden Grennan, and Layla Lagrave helped the American Legion place flags on the gravestones of veterans at Saint Peter’s cemetery.
Joe Patnode, the Commander of Clinton County’s American Legion says this is the second year that the girl scouts, and cadets from the Civil Air Patrol have helped out. This year some kids from 4-H also joined in, placing flags on the stones at Old Post, St. Peters, Riverside and St. John’s cemeteries.
In Schroon Lake, the VFW & American Legion team up every Memorial Day to remember their veterans in both Schroon Lake & near-by North Hudson. The veterans are honored with gun salutes, the laying of wreaths & what’s become a sentimental favorite, two buglers playing taps.
