With the heavy focus in Washington right now on cuts to federal departments & federal spending comes word that a prominent Adirondack research center is losing out on congressional funding that was approved earlier this year. Congress was able to avert a government shutdown last week, but it came at a cost for research centers like the Trudeau Institute in Saranac Lake which has received word that it is no longer getting federal funding for critical upgrades.
Trudeau Institute, which has been at the forefront of infectious disease research for decades ranging from tuberculosis to COVID, applied, and were approved for a 4-and-a-half-million-dollar grant through the federal government’s Community Project Fund, which was to be used for updated technology and to help with recruitment. Trudeau’s President, Dr. William Reiley, says that they’ll now have to re-start the application process from the beginning for the next federal budget.
