Ensemble ArtChoral’s Enchanting Viennese Evening: A Night of Musical Magic

MONTREAL, September 12, 2023 — Montreal’s Maison Symphonique bore witness to an evening of timeless elegance and musical enchantment on September 8th, as Ensemble ArtChoral delivered a mesmerizing performance that transported the audience straight to the era of the Habsburgs and the Viennese court.

.

Under the masterful direction of conductor Matthias Maute, Ensemble ArtChoral embarked on a captivating journey through the rich musical tapestry of 19th-century Austria, inviting concertgoers to immerse themselves in the enchanting and elegant atmosphere that defined this remarkable period.

A Musical Journey to 19th-Century Austria

The program for the evening featured Viennese songs, waltzes, and romances, designed to transport attendees to the heart of Vienna’s cultural heritage. With swirling waltzes by the likes of Johann Strauss II and Johannes Brahms, the Ensemble left no doubt that the audience would be enchanted by the melodies of a bygone era.

At the core of this romantic evening was Brahms’s renowned Liebeslieder, a collection of songs that achieved great success even during the composer’s lifetime.

The performance showcased the exceptional vocal talents of the Ensemble and their ability to convey the essence of Romantic vocal expression.

Talented Virtuosos Join the Ensemble

Accompanying Ensemble ArtChoral on this enchanting journey were two virtuoso pianists, Meagan Milatz and Suren Barry. Ms. Milatz, recognized by CBC as one of Canada’s “30 hot classical musicians under 30” in 2019, lent her remarkable talents to the evening, adding an extra layer of brilliance to the already stellar performance.

Vienna’s Musical Legacy Brought to Life

Conductor Matthias Maute expressed his excitement about paying tribute to Vienna’s rich musical heritage with such gifted artists, saying:

Vienna is synonymous with music and the waltz, and I can’t wait to pay tribute to it with such talented artists. A real musical treat awaits us!”

A Musical Program to Remember

The evening’s program included iconic compositions, including Johann Strauss II’s “Le Danube bleu” and “Champagne Chorus,” as well as excerpts from Johannes Brahms’s “Liebeslieder op.52” and “Liebeslieder op.65.” Franz Schubert’s timeless pieces, such as “Ständchen,” “Der Tanz,” “Gott im Ungewitter,” “Coronach,” and “Der Tanz,” added depth and variety to the repertoire.
