The 41st Annual Jazz Festival will be taking place from May 4 to May 6, and it will include three events. The Plattsburgh State Mambo Combo will be performing in Giltz Auditorium on the campus of Plattsburgh State on May 4. The concert will begin at 7:30 PM, and will include a variety of jazz styles.

Mambo Combo, directed by Herm Matlock, consists of twelve members, including tenor sax players Andrew Miller and Josh Finkel, alto saxophonist and vocalist Kristen Gonzales, baritone saxophonist Huseyin Pekdemir, clarinetist Vihan Wickramasinghe, woodwind player Trevor White, pianist Ryan Mahony, bassist Skylar Brelia-Brewer, drummer Sam Gibney, percussionist Nelson Moore, and guitarist John Acierno. Jazz classics such as “Night in Tunisia,” My Funny Valentine,” and “Nutville” are on the bill, along with other styles.

A guest artist concert will take place in the same venue on Friday, May 5, at 7:30 PM. The artist will be Dan Silverman, Vermont trombonist. The band will be an all-star cast from around northern New York, including Matlock and Matt Pray on trumpet, Wayne Davison on tenor sax, Todd Pray on alto sax, JoLee Yeddo on tuba, Steve Collier on piano, Bob Garrow on bass, and Mike Lewandowski on drums.

Silverman is a highly respected musician in the state of Vermont. He has performed extensively around the east, and has two CD’s on the market. The concert will feature his playing and his arranging. The eight pieces to be performed are Silverman’s arrangements of early Maynard Ferguson recordings, including the writing of Slide Hampton.

Rick Davies Latin/Jazz Thugtet has just released a new CD of the writing of Davies. The festival will include a CD release party on Saturday, May 6, at the Elks Lodge in Plattsburgh. Plans include a salsa dance lesson at 7:00 PM, and a dance to begin at 8:00 PM. The cost of admission will be $10, and CD’s may be purchased for $15. All music performed at this event will be Rick Davies compositions.
