Election Preview

Our election preview includes two big ballot questions.

Proposition 1 asks voters if New York should by-pass the Legislature & hold a constitutional convention to reform state government. Critics fear long-established rights & protections for the Adirondacks could be put at risk. Supporters say it’s an opportunity to tackle thorny issues like ethics and campaign finance reform, and redistricting, that the Legislature has repeatedly failed to address. Proposition 3 asks voters to allow Adirondack communities to use small pieces of the State Forest Preserve for public projects.

This past week we were invited to moderate a debate on Prop 1 on the campus of Clinton Community College, where we heard from two well-respected voices, one for, and one against convening a Constitutional Convention.

Watch the full 90-minute debate:

Also watch our colleague Matt Ryan’s story on Prop 3. Matt, who is the Managing Editor of New York NOW. He talks with political and municipal leaders about why the vote is so critical to projects in the Adirondacks.
