As the locals would say “Bienvenue à Trois-Rivières!” – “Welcome to Trois-Rivières“
Trois-Rivières, one of the oldest cities in Canada, was founded in 1634 by the French explorer Laviolette. The city boasts a rich historical tapestry intertwined with the early French colonization of North America.
As a key industrial hub, particularly in the paper and pulp industries, the city played a significant role in Canada’s economic development.
Located approximately 140 kilometers (about 87 miles) northeast of Montreal, Trois-Rivières is easily accessible for a day trip or weekend getaway, offering a perfect blend of historical charm, stunning landscapes and cultural vibrancy!
A Journey Through Time at Musée Boréalis
Our adventure began at the Musée Boréalis, where the new permanent exhibition, “Transformations,” transported us to the heart of the paper industry. Set within the former CIP filtration plant, the immersive exhibit guided us through the harsh realities of past workers and the evolving technological and environmental challenges of the industry.
This journey through time, enriched by personal narratives and future perspectives, left us with a deep appreciation for the history and significance of Trois-Rivières’ industrial heritage. We were even treated to a paper making workshop!

Lunch with a View at Le Castel 1954
After an enlightening morning, we enjoyed a delightful lunch on the terrace of the Musée Boréalis, operated by the renowned Le Castel 1954.
Overlooking the majestic Saint-Maurice River and the St. Lawrence River, the terrace offered a breathtaking backdrop to our meal, perfectly blending culinary excellence with natural beauty.
Some of the highlights of the table were the beautifully set cheese and charcuterie board as well as the lobster roll and fresh sangria !

History on the Water
The afternoon continued with a unique immersive cruise, “Histoire sur l’eau,” where we embarked on an electric pontoon boat to explore the history of the Saint-Maurice River.
The stories of the men and women who lived along its banks came to life as we glided for an hour across the water, providing a serene and captivating conclusion to our day’s exploration at the Boréalis museum grounds.

Exploring POP Culture, Art and a bit of Penal History
My second afternoon in Trois-Rivières was dedicated to cultural and artistic venues which had to include a visit to the iconic Musée POP.
From catchy exhibits on Superheroes, Agriculture, Festivals, Skateboards, Popular French Expressions and even Winter Storms, this museum is completely dedicated to Quebecois popular culture, which offered fascinating insights into Quebec’s unique cultural identity.
Attached to the museum by a corridor is the Old Jail ( 1822 – 1986), a fascinating historical site that one can explore thanks to a very interactive and interesting hour and a half guided tour, that provides a sobering yet intriguing look into the penal history of Trois-Rivières.

Exploring Public Art – The Graffiti self – walking tour
Every twist and turn reveals a masterpiece in an alley or on a wall of a commercial building that showcases the city’s commitment to making culture accessible and engaging for all.
Dinner at Manoir du Spaghetti
For dinner, I enjoyed a delightful pâtes rosées and “table d’hôte” meal at Le Manoir du Spaghetti, conveniently located at 1147 Hart Street in the heart of Trois-Rivières’ historic district, right across from the Musée POP.
The restaurant has been delighting diners since 1978. Housed in an ancestral home acquired by renowned architect Jean-Louis Caron, this authentic Canadian residence has seen the lives of several notable families, including Ezekiel Hart, the first Jewish member of parliament elected in Canada.
The restaurant’s cozy ambiance and delicious Italian cuisine made for a memorable dining experience, adding yet another layer of enjoyment to my stay.

FestiVoix: A festive Night of Music and celebrations !
In the evening, I immersed myself in the lively atmosphere of the closing concerts of the FestiVoix festival which ran from the 27th of June until the 7th of July 2024.
Over 9 days, with over a hundred performances on 15 stages, the highlight of the night was the performance by Australian singer-songwriter Dean Lewis, whose soulful melodies captivated the audience and brought many to tears ( most of joy) with his very emotional lyrics.
The festival, set against the scenic backdrop of Trois-Rivières’ majestic river, left me with lasting memories of a night filled with great sweeping views, passionate fans and a renewed enthusiasm for live rock concerts .
