10-years ago this past week two convicted killers broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. The search for the escapees stretched from days into weeks leaving local residents on edge.
Alan Cayea was in high school when the escape took place. He remembers police scouring every corner of the North Country from Malone to Lyon Mountain and frequent disruptions in the classroom.
In Lyon Mountain, William Brandon recalls how scared the community was. Brandon says he drove all the way to Peru to make sure his mother was safe. Amanda Grant says people who usually didn’t lock their doors suddenly were during the manhunt. Grant says she also remembers constant police checkpoints.
