Cycling Without Age, a movement started in Denmark to help elders get back on their bicycles has expanded to more than 30 countries, including USA and Plattsburgh, where a new Adirondack Coast Chapter is up and running now offering free bike rides to seniors, nursing home residents, and others who have limited mobility.
A team of 7 volunteer cyclists is giving them rides along Lake Champlain, the Saranac River Trail, and around the former Air Force Base, using an electric powered 3-wheeled bike called a trishaw, with a seat for two in the front. After receiving donations, Cycling Without Age Adirondack Coast ordered its first bike last fall. The goal now is to recruit more volunteer pilots and build a fleet of trishaws.
The group, based at the ARC on the former Air Force Base, held a kickoff & ribbon cutting a couple of weeks ago. 103-year-old Douglas Brown, a Veteran from Peru, and 12-year-old Rowan Roussy from West Chazy had the honor of being given the first ride. You can go to the local Cycling Without Age Adirondack Coast website to sign up for a free ride or learn how to become a volunteer cycle pilot.
