The Nature Conservancy and the New York State Department of Transportation are teaming up on a new pilot program that hopes to protect wildlife in the Adirondacks with walkways that run underneath dangerous highways. A walkway has been installed inside a culvert on NYS Route 12 in Alder Creek in the Western Adirondacks to help bobcats, fishers, and other wildlife safely follow travel corridors between the Adirondack Park and Tug Hill Plateau. If the walkway proves to be a success, others will be added to culverts in the Black River Valley and Southern Champlain Valley.
