Crab Island Caretaker

We meet the volunteer who has cared for one of Plattsburgh’s most historic sites for years. Every September, Plattsburgh remembers the pivotal battle on Lake Champlain that stopped the British Invasion & brought an end to the War of 1812. On September 11th, a ceremony is held every year on Crab Island to honor the sailors & soldiers who died in the Battle of Plattsburgh.
The historic island, State Park, and cemetery has been cared for and maintained for decades by an extraordinary volunteer, Roger Harwood, who is a patriot of a different kind. New York Assemblyman Billy Jones says it has become a priority to get help maintaining Crab Island once Roger steps away from his volunteer work.
