Montreal’s Centaur Theatre is proud to present What Rough Beast, a play written by Alice Abracen and directed by Jessica Abdallah. Returning to the very theatre where it was first featured in Centaur Theatre’s 50th Anniversary Legacy Series, this play is now part of Centaur Theatre’s Brave New Looks Selection for 2023.
The show runs from March 2-11, 2023, at the Centaur Theatre in Montreal.
What Rough Beast begins with a controversial professor being invited to speak at a progressive college, which kicks off a political firestorm and tears the campus apart.
Meanwhile, a young man slouches down the rabbit hole of radicalization with devastating consequences.
Through the story of seven young people, this play engages with topical questions such as: how do we engage with those whose ideas we find hateful? What do we risk in having empathy for the other side, and how, or should we, try to reach across the chasm?
Eda Holmes, Artistic Director at Centaur Theatre, highly recommends the play and believes that it presents a great conversation waiting to happen.
The play presents a brave new look at some of the most heated questions facing our city, country, and world, exploring the danger of dehumanization and the limits of empathy and tolerance. The play contains mature themes and deals with challenging topics such as radicalization, bigotry, and gun violence.
There will be post-show talkbacks exploring themes and questions raised by the play on March 5 and 8 matinees, and March 9 in the evening.
