Step back in time at Montreal’s Silent Movie Concerts – A Vintage Film Extravaganza

This Saturday, May 20th, 2023 – Prepare for an unforgettable evening as the Cinéclub de Montréal / Montreal Film Society presents its highly anticipated bi-annual Ciné-Concert event, transporting movie lovers into the realm of authentic vintage cinema.

Featuring two distinct screenings on the same night. The works are selected by Cinéclub founder Philippe Spurrell and his organization which is dedicated to the conservation, preservation of archive works and cinematic art.

Get ready for a night of cinematic enchantment as the timeless art of silent movies takes center stage. Held in the breathtaking ambiance of a stunning 19th-century Gothic church, this extraordinary event promises to be one of the top film experience of the season.

Immerse yourself in classic works meticulously curated by an organization dedicated to archival conservation and the celebration of cinema as an art form.

Prepare to be captivated by both the mesmerizing films and the electrifying live musical accompaniment.

Starting at 6 pm, prepare for side-splitting laughter as the comical brilliance of Buster Keaton’s masterpiece, “THE GENERAL” (1926), unfolds on the silver screen. This immersive journey into the roaring 1920s features live music performed by Andrei Castanon on piano, Parker Bert on percussion (including the resonating sound of a brass bell borrowed from an old steam train!), and Beth McKenna on wind instruments.

As an added treat, a short silent film by Buster Keaton will also be showcased, further delighting audiences with his timeless comedic genius.

Then, at 9:30 pm, prepare to be transported into the realm of surrealist cinema like never before with Dziga Vertov’s extraordinary masterpiece, “MAN WITH A CAMERA” (1929).

Brace yourself for a mind-bending experience as this cinematic gem unfolds on the silver screen.

As for the musical accompaniment? Prepare to be blown away! Toronto’s own Morgan Paige Melbourne will grace the piano, while Parker Bert adds his mesmerizing percussion skills, and Ecuador’s very own Ivan Fabara mesmerizes with his masterful cello performance.

The evening will commence with a surreal and comic science fiction short by René Clair, followed by a rare screening of a century-old short film that is sure to surprise and delight.
