For next week’s Watch & Wonder Highlight, we’re thrilled to feature the film Charlie Russell’s Old West. After watching, dive deeper with resources about the life and times of Montana’s cowboy artist on PBS LearningMedia.
No one played a larger role in mythologizing the cowboy’s place in American culture than Charles M. Russell. In Charlie Russell’s Old West, explore Russell’s art and life as he witnessed and documented the end of the Wild West open range, and America entered the 20th Century.

Charlie M. Russell – Montana Artist
Grades 6-12
Charles Russell used his art, sculpture and writing to tell the story of the transition of the Montana landscape from the open range to fences and plows. Russell also carefully depicted Native Americans just as their traditional way of life was coming to an end. This collection features media from two films produced by MontanaPBS about the life and work of Charlie Russell—C.M. Russell and the American West and Charlie Russell’s Old West.
