Bold and Heartfelt, Falsettos Takes the Stage at the Segal Centre

Falsettos has arrived at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts, bringing wit, tenderness, and fearless storytelling to Montreal audiences.

Presented by Contact Theatre and proudly supported by the Stage Forward Fund, the production stands as a powerful example of how bold artistic voices are being nurtured on the city’s major stages.

Created by William Finn and James Lapine, Falsettos is a contemporary musical set in late-1970s New York. At first glance, the story unfolds as a sharp, often absurd comedy about a Jewish family turned upside down when Marvin leaves his wife and son to pursue a relationship with another man….But beneath the playful chaos lies a deeply moving exploration of love, identity, and the evolving meaning of family.

As relationships rearrange themselves in unexpected and hilarious ways, the family forms a new, unconventional constellation:

Marvin’s ex-wife begins a romance with his psychiatrist. The lively lesbian neighbours become both the family’s doctor and the caterer for an upcoming Bar Mitzvah.

Meanwhile, Marvin’s young son struggles to make sense of the shifting world around him.

Yet Falsettos is more than a comedic portrait of unconventional family life. The musical also quietly marks the arrival of the AIDS crisis in the early 1980s, adding profound emotional weight to the story. The result is a piece that is both hilarious and deeply human : a work that balances irreverent humor with moments of heartbreaking sincerity.

This production carries particular significance for Montreal’s theatre community. Supported by the Stage Forward Fund, the show highlights the fund’s mission to champion innovative theatre-making and emerging artistic leadership.

Contact Theatre’s co-founders, Debbie Friedmann and Ally Brumer, have been named the fund’s first-ever recipients, marking an exciting milestone for new voices in the city’s performing arts scene.

By investing in bold creation and Jewish creative leadership, the Stage Forward Fund reflects the Segal Centre’s commitment to risk-taking, inclusivity, and community-rooted storytelling. This Falsettos production embodies those values fully, offering a work that feels both timeless and urgently relevant.

With its unforgettable music and lyrics by William Finn, razor-sharp humor, and profound compassion, Falsettos reminds audiences that family isn’t defined by convention : it’s built through love, resilience, and the courage to redefine what belonging looks like.
