Interview Highlights with Henri PFR

I had the chance to interview Henri PFR ahead of his upcoming Montreal show. Here’s what he had to say:

Q: Your career has skyrocketed in recent years, with over 300 million streams and performances at world-renowned festivals like Tomorrowland and Lollapalooza. What has been the most defining moment of your journey so far, and how did it shape you as an artist?

Henri PFR: “For me, the most defining moment of my career was when I had the opportunity to release a mixtape called La Belle Mixtape. At the time, I had tracks with only 100 views maximum on my platforms, but this mixtape, which came out of nowhere, ended up accumulating over 100 million streams. That’s when my career truly became professional. I believe this mixtape, which I had the chance to create 10 years ago, was the launchpad for my journey as a professional artist.

On the performance side, what truly allowed me to grow significantly was having the chance to play on the mainstage of Tomorrowland for six years in a row now. It’s like performing on the biggest stage of the biggest festival in the world, and it happens to be in Belgium. Having that opportunity as a Belgian artist is a dream come true.”

Q: You’ve collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, such as Robin Schulz, Gabry Ponte, and KSHMR. How do these collaborations influence your creative process, and is there an artist you dream of working with in the future?

Henri PFR: “These collaborations have definitely influenced my creative process, especially since artists like Robin Schulz, Gabry Ponte, and KSHMR were already major inspirations for me. I’m incredibly grateful to have had the chance to work with artists of that caliber.

As for an artist I’d dream of working with in the future, it would have to be Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones. My dad is the biggest Rolling Stones fan in the world, and I know how proud he would be if I ever had the chance to be in the studio with Mick (yes, I’d call him Mick if we were in the studio together, haha).”

Q: Your music uniquely blends EDM and tropical house, with hits like “Faith” and “Wake Up” resonating with fans worldwide. How does your background as a pianist influence your sound, and what drives your exploration of electronic rhythms?

Henri PFR: “It’s true that I have a classical background before diving into electronic music, and I do play the piano. I think this has a huge influence on me. I don’t actually listen to much electronic music at home; instead, I listen to other genres like jazz, classical, and rock. I believe it’s really important to keep an open mind and draw inspiration from all kinds of music.

I think this diversity comes through in my tracks, whether in the melodies or the structure of the songs I release. They’re built on influences from a wide range of musical styles and universes, which I feel makes them unique.”

Q: As a coach on The Voice Belgium, you connected with a broad European audience. How has that experience impacted your career, and did it give you a new perspective on nurturing emerging talent in the music industry?

Henri PFR: “Being a coach on The Voice was an incredible experience, and I absolutely loved it. While I’m not a singer myself, as a music producer I’ve worked with many vocalists, which gave me a unique perspective. On the show, I wasn’t teaching contestants how to sing but rather helping them build confidence and guiding them toward the type of songs that suited their voices best so they could go as far as possible in the competition.

It was a fascinating exercise because I focused entirely on voices rather than production, which has now made me much more comfortable guiding singers in the studio. I can definitely say this experience has had a lasting impact on me. In fact, I’m still working with some of the talents I coached on the show.

Overall, it reinforced the idea that there’s incredible talent everywhere. If you look hard enough, whether online or through connections, you’ll find amazing voices. It’s just a matter of seeking them out.”

I would like to thank Henri for taking the time to answer my questions.
