The Town of Plattsburgh and the Clinton County American Legion gathered recently along the Lake Champlain waterfront to announce they will be receiving 250-thousand dollars from the state of New York, with the help of North Country Assemblyman Billy Jones, to begin work on phase one of the Battlefield Memorial Gateway Park, a new park along the lake shore to honor veterans who served in the American Revolution, and War of 1812, during critical naval battles that helped shape our nation.
Nearly 150 American and British servicemen, killed during the Battle of Plattsburgh, are buried on Crab Island. John Rock with American Legion Post 1619 says the veterans park would include boat launches to take visitors out to the island. The plans also include a Vietnam Veterans memorial in the park.
